  Introduction

Hawke Jameson is a thirty six year old single father. When his son Garrett comes home for a visit from college bringing some new friends along, one of them is the outspoken Lynette. One look at the young beauty and something deep and forbidden unfurls in his gut. He tells himself no way hands off, she’s too young. But then he catches her scent, the one a woman gives off when she senses her mate and all bets are off.

“I want to have you in the worst way Kitten. But if we do this there has to be more to us than just sex. There’s going to be rules.”

  “What kind of rules?”

“I won’t share you, that’s first and foremost. If I take you you’re mine no questions. I haven’t felt this way about anyone in a long time. In fact, the last time I felt anything like this it wasn’t this strong. You have to be very sure before you say yes because baby, if I put you under me, when I put you under me, there will be no turning back.”

  Hawke

"Son you know you don't have to ask me that, of course it's okay the more the merrier." I hung up the phone with a smile. It would be nice to see the kid. He's been away at school for the semester, the longest three months of my life.

He’d been home for a few days over the holidays of course, but that was never long enough. Now this time he was going to be home for almost three months. Praise be.

My boy was all I had left of his mother who had been taken from us when he was too young to remember he even had a mother. A drunk driver going the wrong way on the highway had slammed into her on her way home. We were barely twenty-two when it happened.

Garrett was my pride and joy, we'd never been apart his whole life not once, but my mom and dad had convinced me that going away to the school of his choice would be good for my son, help him to become a man.

And more than that I wanted only the best of everything life had to offer for my boy. Thank goodness he didn’t have the same struggles I had when I was his age.

I’d had to grow up early, after getting Janine pregnant our last year in high school. Our parents had stepped in and helped us out so we could both finish school and things had worked out fine, until she was taken from us.

After she was gone it had just been me and Garrett and I guess because he was all I had left of the girl I’d loved so much, I’d kept him close and over protected him a bit I guess.

It was the hardest thing I'd had to do in a long time, sending him away. Watching him get on that plane to California. But I'd done it, and hearing the joy in my son's voice each time he called, news of every new friend he made, solidified the rightness of the decision for me.

Now he's calling to tell me some of his new buddies want to tag a
long for his vacation. I better see about getting the house together.

The housekeeper might give me lip about all the extra bodies but when wasn't Sheila grumbling at me about something.

"Hey Sheila that was our boy on the phone." I called out as I entered the massive kitchen with its nineteenth century farm style decor.

It had been Janine's dream to have a kitchen like this. She'd been a farm girl at heart and loved anything to do with the lifestyle.

When I'd had enough of city life and needed a place to raise my rambunctious off spring I'd chosen the wide-open spaces of Wyoming to call home.

I'd put most of the insurance money from the accident into a trust for my boy, which had grown into a nice bundle and used the rest to buy the ranch. Now fourteen years later I ran one of the most successful cattle ranches in the country. Go figure.

"When's my baby coming home Hawke? I'm still mad as spit that you sent my boy to that damn California. A bunch of fornicating jezebels if you ask me." I rolled my eyes behind her back as I headed to the cupboard for a glass to get some water.

It was the same argument everyday for the past three months or so. And no matter how much I tried to convince her, she wasn’t having it. Garrett was her baby and nothing would do but he be home underfoot night and day for her to fuss over.

"He needs an education Sheils, now stop giving me a hard time we've got work to do. Garrett is bringing company when he comes home in a few days." From the way she puffed up like a Bantam rooster I knew exactly what she was thinking.

"Not that kind of company woman, some of his school friends want to tag along for part of the summer." She still looked at me suspiciously but I chose to ignore her. There was no point in trying to convince her of anything she'd draw her own conclusions anyway.

"We need to get the guest rooms set up and we're gonna need supplies."

"What's this we, you planning on sweeping floors and making beds?"

"I'd rather eat dirt." I do so love to get her goat.

"Worthless that's what you are. How many of these here guests are you expecting?"

"He said five." I waited for the screeching to start but not a peep. She wiped her hands on the dishtowel looking thoughtful.

"That's fine then no trouble at all."

"What? What was that last month when I wanted to have company over and you had a fit?" She placed her hands on her hips and blasted me.

"Charlene Foster and her whelp ain't company; pack of money grubbing termites you ask me." She grumbled the last but I still heard her loud and clear, just as I'd heard her when she told me if I brought the two women out for the weekend she'd quit.

I don't know why I haven't fired her yet. For twelve years she's been bossing me around with her opinions on everything under the sun. Maybe it had something to do with the way she loved my son and the way he absolutely adored her.

"Don't you have animals to feed or something boy? You're getting in my way here, set and eat your breakfast and then head out. I think I'll get Emily to come on out a day early and give the house a run through. Can't have my baby embarrassed in front of his friends. Probably them beach types with their half naked selves. Lawd I hope my boy didn't become no heathen."

"For the...he went to Stanford University Sheils one of our nation's leading institutes of higher learning, not the damn jungle to hang out with the natives."

There’s no talking to her, once she gets something in her head she’s like a bull terrier. No matter where he’d gone off to school she would’ve found fault. I saved my breath and let her have her say.

"You watch your mouth Hawke Jameson cussing at an old lady; for shame." Oh today she's old; yesterday she was threatening to brain me with a cast iron skillet for tracking mud on her carpet. She had a few choice things to say about me and my lineage for taking her baby away, but it wasn’t anything I hadn’t heard before a hundred times.

I grabbed a quick bite and got out of her way. She didn't like people hanging around her kitchen except for Garrett of course. When he was home the two of them were thick as thieves and I was persona non grata. It would be fun to see how she dealt with his new friends, seeing as how she didn’t like to share.

The sun was scorching hot when I went out the back door. The smell of freshly cut grass mixed with the usual ranch scents of animals and curing hay tickled my nose as I made my way towards the corral, where Jed was already putting my training horses through their paces.

We'd come a long way since those lean early days. I’ll admit to not knowing what the hell I was doing back then. The ranch had been a dream of Janine’s. Something she never got to see.

I guess I did it out of respect for her memory as much as it was to raise our son somewhere away from the city.

I’d had a hell of a time those first few years. But with help from the neighbors and a whole lot of trial and error, I’d made it work. Now I had hands working for me to take some of the load off. The ranch had already paid for itself ten times over and was still doing well.

I'd given Garrett the opportunity to choose whatever it was he wanted to do in life. The fact that he'd made it into one of the country's leading schools was a thing of pride for me. In fact, quite a few people in our little ranching community had celebrated the occurrence with us.

That's what I'd wanted for him. Small town life where neighbors knew one another and shared in the joys and hardships alike of each other.

But I'd given him the freedom to choose his own way as a man. It was no surprise that my boy had done so well in school. Both his mother and I had held our own there too. But there was never any guarantee that kids would inherit their parents’ brain.

Nonetheless it did my heart proud that my boy has chosen to study veterinary science so that he could come back here and work with his old man and help run things. I thought for sure once he got a taste of life elsewhere he’d bolt, but so far his heart was still here.

"Hey Jed how's that mare coming along?"

"Not too bad boss, she's not as ornery this morning, only nipped at me twice." The young buck grinned as said mare snorted and flicked her tail at him.

I loved training horses, it was almost the same as training a high strung woman and bringing her to heel; not that I'd done much of that lately but a man could fantasize couldn't he?

The rest of the day went as was to be expected from life on a working ranch. There were animals to send off to market, some headed to other ranches for stud service, and the vet was in and out doing his thing.

The thought of old doc Simpson made me think of my boy and his vocation. Now I didn't have to worry about him living his life off somewhere out of reach. After his however many years of schooling he'd be back home where he belonged.

His mother would've been so proud of our boy. It was times like this that I felt the loss acutely. She should’ve been here to see what her son had done with his life.

Whoever said time heals all wounds had never lost anyone truly close to them. Yes there were days you could go without thinking of the love you'd lost but even that made you feel guilt, the guilt of a survivor they called it.

I'm not a complete fool. I’d love to meet someone and fall in love. But I was afraid my once in a lifetime had come and gone. I’d had a few women here and there over the years to take the edge off, but nothing lasting.

And the one woman who had shown an interest here lately I couldn’t risk bringing home because my crazy housekeeper had promised to shoot her on sight.

"Okay enough of this maudlin shit Hawke, get your shit together." I pulled myself out of my musings and went over the books again. Things were in the black again this year thank heaven. With all the shit that had been going on lately both in the country and around the world everyday was a toss up.

That's why I'd made sure and socked some money away for Garrett's future as well as a little something for myself. If heaven forbid things should go south we'd be set for a good twenty years or so. That came from being frugal and putting awa
y more than I'd spent over the years.

For the next few days I kept myself busy and out of the house since Sheila had lost her mind in a cleaning frenzy. You’d think the president was coming to visit the way she carried on.

The house was spotless and hot as the seven levels of hell with all the cooking and baking she’s been doing the last few days.

“Hawke did you get me them boysenberries I asked you to pick from the back forty?” I guess she didn’t have any problem asking me to go traipsing across the land in hundred-degree heat to pick some damn berries. Just to mess with her I told her I hadn’t.

“I got too busy, I don’t see why Garrett can’t get them himself once he gets here.” That got me a look that would curdle milk and I grinned and held up the basket full of the berries she uses to make my son’s favorite pie.

“Hand them over fool, I have to soak them in the sugar for a bit and my baby will be home soon. I want his pie nice and ready by the time he gets here.” I handed over the berries and got out of the way once she started muttering to herself.

It sure would be good to have Garrett here to take some of the heat off my ass. Not that she ever yelled at him, no she saved all her venom for me. And since she blamed me for packing him off as she puts it, I get to hear about it everyday.

I found some things to keep me busy the rest of the morning, willing the time to go by. Before I knew it I’d tamed one fractious stallion and made me a new friend. He’d only knocked me on my ass twice; I considered that progress. Yesterday he wouldn’t even let me near him.

I checked my watch when the day got to waning away towards noon. It would soon be time to go pick my boy up at the airport that was quite a ways out. A good two hours there and back. I felt pride and excitement as I headed back to the house to get cleaned up. It would be good to see my son again.

The airport was a maze of madness when I got there. I didn’t know that many people came through Wyoming on any given day.
