  That was her thing, clothing design and she was pretty good at it, though she’s kept it hidden from everyone except her parents and Tammy until now.

  “Where are we going?” No one else seemed to notice our sudden disappearance, since they were all having so much fun.

  The music was loud, but not too loud to bring the parents running, and there was food and drink all over the playroom, where we’d decided to take the impromptu party.

  He didn’t answer me, just led me from the playroom, which was conveniently located at the very back of the house and was right around the corner from the stairs leading down to the basement.

  He took me down those stairs now without turning on the light. We didn’t go too far since the basement hadn’t been finished as yet. There were still boxes of stuff lining the walls and heavy pieces of furniture strewn around.

  We got to the bottom of the stairs and he turned me to lean against the rail. “I miss you.”

  “Then mom brought her home from the hospital. I’d heard horror stories from some of the other kids about being neglected and stuff like that, and I was ready to run away if that happened, I was gonna go to grandma’s.

  But it was nothing like that, mom and dad took care of the baby of course, but they let Jared and me help with her, and they still spent a lot of time with us.

  Why, are you having a little brother or sister?” could that be why she’s been so strange lately? It didn’t seem to fit, but what did I know? I’ve been so caught up in my own life that I could’ve read too much into what I’d been seeing with her.

  “Your dad’s late, do you want to try calling him again?” her face changed and again I couldn’t shake the feeling that whatever was going on with her, was about more than a new baby.

  “He’s probably been hung up on a project, can you just take me home Sian? It’s getting dark out and I know your dad won’t let you drive if we wait much longer.”

  “Sure, let me get my keys and tell them where I’m going.”

  We left the house and she seemed a little more relaxed now, as we made our way through the streets to her home, which wasn’t that far from Jace’s.

  “I’ll see you tomorrow, don’t forget, we’re gonna practice a little bit in the afternoon and then you’re gonna show coach what you’re made of.”

  “Are you sure I’m ready Sian, I mean what if I choke again?”

  “You won’t, because I’ll be there doing it with you and I’ll make sure. You already have the moves down, you just need to concentrate and not let the fact that the other girls are around affect you so much.”

  We said goodnight and I left to go back home. I was tempted to go by Jace’s house, but in the end I just drove by, even though it was out of my way.

  When I reached the blind spot down the street from his house I slowed down. It was a little wooded area between the houses that the kids sometimes used to get up to mischief, or to make out, whatever they were in the mood for.

  There was only room for one car in the little cleared patch and all the rest was trees and brush. There was a car there tonight, one that looked vaguely familiar, but I couldn’t really place it.

  Then I saw a very familiar head, as it lifted from what I’m guessing was the driver’s lap. I was frozen for a good minute not quite registering what I’d seen.

  I don’t think she saw me, I’d driven off before she could make out anything I hope, but I’d sat there too long trying to figure out what was going on, after I’d finally remembered where I’d seen the car before.

  It had only been a minute, but it felt like forever. Now it was morning and after a night spent tossing and turning, I was still no closer to knowing what to do.

  I'm not sure of what I saw but I'm pretty sure I saw something. Crap, I hate being in this position, what am I supposed to say? Maybe I should ask Jace, but I'm not too excited about bringing up his old girlfriend in this type of conversation.

  Not that I'm still jealous or anything, just... Whatever.

  He came to pick me up and I tried very hard to keep my worry from showing, but I should’ve known better, nothing gets by him.

  “What’s the matter baby?”

  “Nothing just thinking about some stuff.”

  “What kind of stuff, this thing with the idiot? I told you, you don’t have to worry about that anymore.”

  I thought it best to let him believe that that’s what was bothering me. Until I knew for sure what I was dealing with anyway, though I was pretty sure.

  Now I can't even look at Cassandra, I'm afraid the guilt will show on my face. She was one of the first people to approach me when Jace pulled into the lot.
